Sharks dash Thunder's hopes

28/08/2008 10:43:00 AM
PEEL Thunder needed to win against East Fremantle at Rushton Park last Saturday to stay in finals contention but failed, losing by 36 points.

Not even a 2000-strong crowd, which was the biggest round 22 WA Football League crowd, could not lift the home side to victory.

Thunder started the game stronger and led by 10 points at the first break but after a seesawing first half, a one to seven-goal third term cost the Thunder their lead and the game.

Trailing by 48 points going into the final term, the Thunder kicked two quick goals within the opening five minutes of the quarter to close the gap after coach Chris Waterman swung defender Matt Battye into the forward line.

But the Sharks fought on with Andrew McCarrey (four goals) and Theo Adams (33 possessions) leading the way to a 17.13 (115) to 11.13 (79) Sharks victory.

Midfielders Luke Hammond tried hard for Peel and received support from captain Daniel Haines, Kane Bloxsidge and ruckman Zac Beeck but it was not enough.

Going into the round 22 clash Thunder was sixth on the WAFL ladder with a club record eight win/10 loss record, one win behind fourth placed Swan Districts and on equal points with the Sharks in fifth position.

With two qualifying games remaining it was still mathematically possible for the Thunder to qualify for their first finals appearance but only if they had won against the Sharks.

Although finals are now out of reach, this Saturday the Thunder will look to finish their season strong against the Swans at Steel Blue Oval - a side they have already been defeated by twice this season.

Peel lost to the Swans by 32 points in the opening round of the season at Rushton Park and in round 10 at Steel Blue Oval they were defeated by 22 points.

In that round 10 loss, coach Waterman blamed the result on a lack of player discipline.

Played at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday in slippery conditions, the Swans kicked seven goals in the second quarter while holding the Thunder to 3.2 to take a commanding 45-point lead into the main break.

Led by West Coast-listed forward Ash Hansen who finished the game with five goals, 14 kicks and nine marks, the Swans dominated for most of the afternoon.

When the result was beyond doubt the Thunder kicked seven of the last eight goals in the final term to gain some scoreboard respectability in the 14.10 (94) to 17.14 (116) loss.

Peel forward Hayden Ballantyne was one of the better players and scored four goals, Haines also tried hard and along with midfielders Bloxsidge and Simon Rosa.

Hammond was also impressive along with Beeck who dominated the ruck contests with 38 hit-outs.
